As my IH 244 is my first tractor, I am somewhat new at this compact tractor stuff. Thanks to this post I have learned a ton already - very good source for all kinds of info, thanks to whoever put it together and maintains it.Here is my question - Will 21hp handle a 5' box blade with rippers in moderate hard clay loam soil, or should I go with a 4'. Also, I tried to pull my dad's 8' landscape rake the other day - too big for my little machine when loaded with soil. Would a five footer be manageable?One more: I would like to buy a tiller. Thinking of a Befco T30 or similar brand. Again, what size would be right for my machine - I'm thinking of a 50"By the way, hats off to the manufactures and dealers for getting these little machines out - they are awsome. Even though my dad thinks it is too little for any of his ford 8n & 860 size implements because they are "too heavy", I like the controllability, maneuverability, and power to size ratio of the compacts. After listening to him, though, I am having second thoughts about getting a 21hp instead of waiting for 30. Reasonable $$ compacts are hard to find here though, unless one can afford new.

Mike, I bought a used grey, a Mitsubishi ST1840,only had it for two months,its a four cylinder diesel 4x4 22.5 to 23 HP.I have a Bush Hog loader on the front & bought a used 48" tiller,the name on it looks like Auita or something close to that.It does wonders. My tractor has a four speed PTO & in with the PTO in 4th & tranny in low first at 2000 it truns up my gardens better then my Troy built can.This tiller has adjustable depth,if you get one make sure you get one that you can adjust the tiller depth.This one has the adjustable steel wheels.Anyway, I till deep & the tractor will bog down in 4th PTO & tractor in low first.This happens when I run into the soil with more clay in it.So I just go down to 3rd PTO & back to 4th when I'm out of that part of the garden.Also this tiller is no wider then the tractor.There are no tractor tire marks left.48" is working for me just fine.Good Luck. I have a JD750 which is about 20hp at the PTO. I regularly use a JD550 tiller (which is a four foot industrial tiller) and have no problem with it. The tiller is offset so that it will cover any tracks left by the right rear tire. If tilling in virgin ground, I make at least two passes before going to full depth, but in working ground that has been worked before (ie, garden, etc.) I go to full depth on the first pass and always till with the tractor in first gear. So from my experience, the 50" tiller you are looking at should work well with the available horsepower. If the ground is hard packed clay, you can still do OK, just use common sense and only till each pass to a depth that the tractor can handle. Try to find a tiller with a slip-clutch arrangement for the PTO, as this will protect both your tractor and tiller! ....

Mike,I don't know where you are but good compact tractors at fair prices are just hard to find. I have an IH 254 w/4wd. Same basic tractor as yours but a couple of additional HP. I pull a 5' rotary cutter and a 6' grading blade without any problem. The 4wd helps alot. Box blades come in sizes and weights. I would see if I could borrow a 5' and give it a try. We are going to be doing some landscaping soon and I plan on getting a cheap 5' box blade in the 400# range. Would appreciate some feedback if you go with a 5' of any weight. I've got a 21hp TC21D with a 5' box blade. Same type of soil you mentioned. It works great for me. Sometimes bogs down a little, but a slight nudge up on the 3pt lift does the trick. If I had it to do again, I'd stay with the 5' over the 4'. ....

I have a 4300 [25.5 PTO hp] with a 50" tiller. works great, hardly puts any load on the tractor. I would think 21hp should handle it.My brother in law has a 6' combination scraper [box scraper on one side, reverse blade on another and teeth on the third - you rotate it] for his 8N and he moves along with it quite handily, even with the teeth down. ....

Hi Mike I bought a 58" tiller from T.S.C (Tractor supply co)for $999It is made by befco and it is supposed to run on a 20-40hp tractorI run mine on a 25hp Kubota (22.5 pto) with no trouble at allI just finished tilling 3 acres of hard packed clay and with 2 passesi was able to till down to 5-7" . The 1st pass was noisy and rough butwith the second pass the tiller sat right down and turned the clay to powderThe unit i have also has a side shift on it which makes it nice to till upclose to building's.I also use a 6' box blade on same tractor with no problems but i sometimes have to use 4wd i don't think you should have much trouble with a 5' as long as you can get the traction Good luck and hope this helps you ....
